about my rights and non-rights by the media, case-studies, friends and family. Its everywhere around us and the client is always the king, as they say. I have learnt things are different in Egypt.
Here is my own case-study that revealed the sad truth.
A few days ago I got a new oven. A friend came over to place it into the kitchen. As he was trying to open the gas tube at the back of it, his hand slided and cut into a metal so sharp that it cut his finger to the bone, lots of blood, my friend in shock and serious pain. We rushed to the hospital and he had his finger stitched 6 times. There is a metal cover for the ovens here in Egypt, it had been very badly cut. From the front it looks good and the edges have been polished, but the back side, because it can't be seen, was left unpolished and therefore actually extremely dangerous. In Europe this kind of product wouldn't even be on sale or if it was and something like that happened, the consumer could sue the company and make them cost a fortune...but that's Europe and it doesn't apply here.
I was explained that if the egyptian consumer would file a report at the police for faulty and dangerous product on sale (and the oven company was a local one, big and well known), then the oven company after being interrogated by the police (probably after a bit of tips to the police and if the customer is lucky enough for the police to act in his defense) would make very big problems for the customer. Some electronics companies have deals with the gas-providers, the customers gas can be cut or price raised or another means of repression. So in any case the customer will loose, because he was messing with a big company. There is no strict enough law to protect people from these situations and if there were, they wouldn't be obeyed. The companies are the king.
If any of You reading this and living in Egypt has any positive experience in the same field, please let us know and share some positive tone:) !
