Before I start I will ask you to play this piece of genious music by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt in the backgroud as you read along, because this music is the key to what made me write this blog post. Just play it and you might just drop a tear or two, I did…
Today I was enlightened, something came to my mind to help me understand myself and the world around me! One thing lead to another and something became very clear: I'm the musician who left home… There is a story you should know to understand what I mean by that so let me share it with you.
Before I decided to come to dance in Egypt I had my doubts and worries and I asked the advice of my friend and teacher Pille. She then told me a story she heard from another friend - it helped me make up my mind.
There had been 2 schoolmates, both excellent in music. The one who told this story claimed to have had better marks in school. After graduation he turned down a job opportunity in a big famous theatre for personal reasons and returned to a small village to teach music to children and to work with small local orchestras. The other schoolmate succeeded big time, because he took his chances and even left home for it! He is now nationally and internationally recognized conductor. The first schoolmate still regrets giving up the chance of having a grand career like his friend.
So I went to Egypt! Almost 4 years have passed. I have never regretted it. I missed my family and friends often, but I know that's the sacrifice I had to make.
Fast forward to yersterday night. Im watching dance videos in Youtube before sleeping and one peculiar one caught my attention. This one (don't play it just yet, keep the first music going, you can see the choreography later, but the composition is the same as is playing):
I was watching this video and to my surprise I knew the music by heart (yes, the same one that is playing now), every score! I have danced to the same piece in my company's "Moulid" performance in Cairo Opera House. I was dancing the character of a traditional Egyptian doll, dreamy and delicate. It was my favourite dance of the whole show and people told me I made the doll become alive! So I wanted to find out who is behind this composition and to my biggest shock it's the most famous Estonian(!) composer in the world, Arvo Pärt (to my foreign friends, Arvo Pärt has been most performed living composer in the world for the 5 year). Now, I have just found out that as the only Estonian dancer in Cairo I happened to dance to the scores of Arvo Pärt on Cairo Opera big hall, thousands of kilometers away from home. For me it is so much more than just coincidence! It completes my circle! It's my justification and satisfaction of my decision to leave my homeland, just like Arvo Pärt once did and as did schoolmate in Pille's story. I am also the musician who left home - to live my own magic.
