Brotherhood attacking dancers during show!

Im writing this blog angry and sad the same time. My disgust towards the Muslim Brotherhood is now personal. Yesterday, while performing on the stage, a crazy Brotherhood member climbed on the stage and pushed us off the stage! He made a big number out of us dancing, screaming and calling for Allah and since noone else listened to him, decided to take matters into his own hands and attack us directly.

What exactly happened? We entered the stage and started our choreography. Suddenly we noticed an angry man infront of the stage yelling to us and the audience. The dancers in the front already felt intimidated and were looking around and almost stopped their dance. I continued my dancing together with my partner. I knew the security men would be there in a second to drag the crazy man away. I was wrong. Then he climbed on the stage and started aggressively pushing us off the stage. By that time I was doing a lift with my partner and he simply carried me out quickly. He did manage to push my legs though and that made me furious! We didn't continue to dance and went backstage.

Ready for stage, still happy
Im angry because the crazy man ruined the party and the mood of the evening. It was a big corporate event for the Arab Engineers Association in the 6-star Fairmont hotel with a fancy dinner and a very respectful and polite show. We had a beautiful 7-minute show with classical ballet, salsa and a piece of saidi (where I was the soloist;). To be honest, I took my camera to show You, my followers, how amazing this show was and I had never felt more ballerina in my life! But the crazy men took the chance from all the international quests to enjoy our show from.

I feel sad because I have never seen anyone react this way to dancers. I have heard that some Nile cruise bellydance shows have been canceled because one quest's table is Brotherhood. But I have never heard them attacking the dancers on stage. I never imagined someone could hate dance like this.

What happened next? Everyone was shocked and furious, the choreographer, a lovely ballet teacher from Institute of Ballet, was in tears. We changed our clothes and by then the hotel managers and the corporation directors came to speak to us, apologize for this situation and call us back on stage to finish our show. They sayd, the crazy man had been thrown out from the hotel and the quests want to see us. Apparently the crazy man was one of the quests, from Muslim Brotherhood and not an Egyptian. But we were too shocked and hurt by the whole situation to even consider redoing the show. It took a long time for the security to arrive and take him outside, obviously he was treated mildly because he is from Brotherhood. I heard they filed the report to his embassy, but even though, since the Brotherhood is in power for now, nothing bad can't happen to him.

Muslim Brothehood just got personal with me and Im even more eager to go out on 30.6 and fight the Brotherhood on the streets for this drama in the hotel. For my eyes it was kind of a warning what will Egypt be like if we don't rise out voices against them. The only thing holding me back is my family and for them I will not go out on 30.6, but Im angrier than before and I hope to take my revenge in another time another way.

Here is everything caught on tape. Im the dancer in the middle with red dress.

  1. Unfortunately, as long as there are both ongoing British and Ottoman post colonial attitudes and Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East and North Africa, there will be attacks on dancers. I hope these hostile attitudes that serve no purpose change soon.

  3. omg!! what a disappointing thing to happen. OK I have heard all the stories already, and it has happened to me but not because of me dancing it was because it was not allowed on premises at all which is still bad , but not because of Brotherhood and certainly not some random party guest. How dare they!! I can't wait till they take them out on the 30th. I hope Egypt never becomes like Iran. Long live dance! and the arts.

  6. I'm so sorry for you Kaidi and it is disconcerting to hear about an incidence like this :( But I guess there is some comfort in knowing that the remainder of the audience did want you to dance and that he, by chasing you away, most likely did not win much goodwill for the Muslim Brotherhood among them.

  8. The MB have have no right to push their values on everyone. I'm sorry you didn't go back and finish your show--it would have made all of you feel so much better.

Here is a video to help you feel some solidarity

  10. Thanks dear readers for Your support! I am fine and thanks god noone was physically hurt. But our hope and respect of dancers was hurt...This is now the story everyone talks about in Cairo dance world because is crossed all boundaries. I hope the stupid provocation of the MB will take them down!
But until then we keep happy and keep dancing because this is what we love! KAIDI

  11. This is indeed very sad. As this was an individual act he must feel empowered to do as he wants because the leadership of Egypt is MB and so he an individual on a soloist crusade if tyranny to police as "he" see's fit. Very sad that a mind like this can be so small and empty!

  12. You should have gone back out and danced just to spite them. Don't let these people intimidate you. To me there is some enjoyment in shoving it back in the face of those who disapprove.
